My Bittersweet Birthday

So, I turned 25 last week. It was a bittersweet experience. Just before midnight Jewlz (my friend since Kindergarten. Scratch that, 5th grade – she was a bully in kindergarten) texted me a sweet little emoji-laden happy birthday message noting that it’s now acceptable to lie about my age. That’s what she does, and that’s what I plan on doing.

Too add to the bittersweetness, my April 3 bday (which is typically springlike and lovely) got hit by a blizzard. Like, a serious blizzard. So yeah, it snowed on my parade.

North-Loop-Minneapolis Photo Cred: my friend Carrie – @carrielmcgregor on Instagram!

A stark contrast to last year when I was in Cabo (85 and sunny) with Matt. This year he was traveling for work, then had to head back to Chi, so I don’t get to see him for a few weeks : ( Cabo-Beach-Photo

Ok, ok, enough complaining. On to the sweet part! Specifically cupcakes! And cake! And cocktails! And tulips! I have the best friends : )

And the really sweet part? My best friends’ baby was born at 9:00am on my bday. In Wisconsin. Guess who was born at 9:30am on April 3rd in WI? ME. Seriously, what are the chances? I was placing bets on him coming March 17th so I was not expecting this at all. It was super fun though, we drank beer at the hospital (Helen’s husband packed a cooler and set of signature pint glasses. Obviously.) We remained entertained for hours as Baby Theo made funny faces and the occasional tiny pterodactyl noise. What a little cutie pie!

Also, he insisted on taking his first selfie with Auntie Marta.

I kinda treated myself to a new car, too. My lease was just about up so it was necessary, but I’m sure the quarter-life crisis in me made it difficult to decline an upgrade, so I went for it. But before I acquired that shiny black car I bought what I thought would be my one and only splurge to myself… a shiny black pair of discount designer shoes (thanks Opitz Outlet –just my size–nothing short of miraculous)!

Sometimes, you fall head over heels for a pair of heels and just can’t help but purchase them and put them on a pedestal. Or in this case, a cake stand.

As bitter/sweet as this bday was, I‘m really look forward to the next, because I must cross that brdige before THE WEDDING, and I have a feeling Baby Theo will stick his face in a cake and it will be super entertaining.

I Think You’d Like to Take a Hike

Take a hike! Seriously. Because before you know it we (those of us that bravely reside in the Midwest, at least,) will be covered in snow. For this very reason I knew I had to get out and hike before the blizzards blew in and ruined my chances.

So last weekend Matt and I did just that. Although we missed the peak of fall autumnal elegance, it was a beautiful day and we happened to stumble upon some nice fall foliage and naturey goodness:

The-JCR-Girls-Hike-1 Pike Island | St. Paul, MN

Minnehaha Falls | Minneapolis, MN (Or as my GPS likes to call it MinneHaHA!)

So now that you can’t wait to get out and hike, what’s a girl to wear?

Because fancy boots (although I’m in LOVE with these) might very well get muddy, a pair like this is practical:

Affordable Riding Boots *I wore a pair just like this all over Ireland during my semester abroad. Trashed them in the end, but the faux-leather lasted thru many a hike!

Because when it’s on the brink of winter in MN, you really don’t know what you’re gonna get! Any combination of these will do:

Go for something cozy and cashmere like this infinity scarf, or a chunky cable knit.

The name windbreaker cracks me up for no apparent reason, but I’ve got this bad boy and approve of it. And this one is nice, too.

Because it’s fun! We (boyfriend R3dline Photo and I) shot the photos above with a Canon EOS Rebel.
