Time to Get Bundled Up

Over the past couple of months, New York has offered up the most confusing weather I think I’ve ever experienced. I’ve gone from nights of layering up for bed praying my radiator turns on to cranking my AC the next day. This also entails switching up my wardrobe daily – kind of annoying. BUT…we’ve had about three days of chilly weather (the longest stretch so far!) so I think it might officially be time to bundle up! If you’re a longtime reader of the blog you know I’m extremely fond of the cold temps. Blame it on my Midwestern roots, but I can’t resist a good winter coat and think outfits are better when multiple layers are involved.

I can’t wait to share all of my favorite cold weather pieces over the next couple of weeks but let’s start with the pieces everyone will see the most – coats, hats, scarves, gloves..basically all of the best things about winter. Also, because I’m already in the holiday spirit of giving, all of the items below are ON SALE. Like..major sale (40% off at J. Crew for example. Yeah, I wasn’t lying!).

And okay – I know the holidays are all about spending time with friends and family, but why not also score a good deal on gifts for those friends and family members?! Check out the sale roundup below featuring all of the great deals you can get during the days leading up to the infamous Black Friday:

Week in Review: Fall is in Full Swing

Fall is in full swing, and that means miniature pumpkins and decorative Indian corn will magically make their way into your shopping cart. You’ll suddenly have an irresistible urge to visit an apple orchard and a pumpkin farm. Perhaps a vineyard, too – while you’re at it! A strange sensation pulls you in the direction of all things plaid and flannel and it becomes abundantly clear that you do not have enough cozy socks and blankets (and never will).

That said, cider season is officially upon us! If you’re like me, you skip the PSL and go straight for the good stuff.

If we were ‘real’ lifestyle bloggers, we’d whip up our own clever cider concoction and share just how rewarding it is to make your own from scratch. I must say, this Trader Joe’s version isn’t half bad! Apple-Cider-Season Disclaimer: These apples aren’t freshly picked from the orchard. They’re Trader Joe’s, too.

Fall-Foliage-OnlyInMN And with the crisp autumnal breezes comes a myriad of gorgeous natural colors. A unique mix of reds, greens, yellows, oranges and maroons. A striking blend of colors that are just too Instagrammable to resist. It’s peak fall foliage season in Minnesota right now (meaning, we have ALL of the colors), and I have plenty of ‘grams to prove it!

Including this one, featuring my recent encounter with a real-life emoji! Real-Life-Leaf-Emoji

Wayzata-Yacht-Club And this snap, that’s really just a tease because that body of water is about to FREEZE soon.

Fall-Foliage-MN-2 And this tunnel of trees at a scenic outdoor wedding venue. Ok, I lied. This is actually outside of the public library. Looks like a lavishly decorated aisle though, doesn’t it?

Taylors-Falls-MN-Fall This recent hike was an eyeopener, featuring trees with only a few fall leaves left : (

Wood-Watch-1When it comes to fall clothing and accessories, I gotta admit, I don’t overdose on plaid and flannel and oversized capes. They’re not for everyone. I do love a cozy cable knit sweater, a fleece-lined quarter-zip (like this Heathered Green Patagonia “Better Sweater” that’s become a weekend staple), and leather riding boots (like these Frye faves I’ve been wearing on the daily).

JORD-WatchAccessory-wise, stylish wood watches are seasonally appropriate and make quite the fashion statement. This Zebrawood and Dark Sandalwood combination caught my attention, and the best news is, the husband likes it, too! Check out woodwatches.com to explore the full collection of men’s and women’s watches. (Shown: Dover Series Zebrawood & Dark Sandalwood. c/o).

Wood-Watch-2 Doesn’t it make you wanna go all analog and take a hike? Reaching for your iPhone is not required to tell time. It was, however, required for this photo, HA!

Like what you see? Enter to win a wood watch.

Until next time!

Spa Day with VMV Hypoallergenics

I’ve always been completely content doing at-home masks, exfoliating, manis/pedis…all of that fun stuff…but, when I had the opportunity to go to VMV Hypoallergenics in Soho I couldn’t say no. A good friend of mine introduced me to the brand last year and I’ve gone to several events that they host at their shop on Mott Street. Last fall, I won a 90-minute treatment so I finally carved some time out of my weekend to go and see what it was all about.

VMV Hypoallergenics

First of all, I really love the brand. I have pretty sensitive skin that I’m always so nervous about agitating. With VMV I don’t have to worry about that because all of their products are free of all the things that could irritate your skin (regardless of the type)…parabens, preservatives, fragrances, and dyes. I was happy I didn’t have to stress about what was going on my skin which helped me to relax even more!

VMV Spa

My aesthetician  talked to me about my skin and problem areas before diving in. She gave me some suggestions based on the issues I was experiencing and then explained how she would address them in the session that day. Honestly, I thought I was doing a pretty good job taking care of my skin but after my appointment I walked away with a lot of ways I could be doing better. It can be overwhelming to know the best way to take care of your skin or the best products to use so it felt good to walk out with a more focused plan. I need to exfoliate more and make sure to wear sunscreen everyday – even if I’ll only be outside to walk to and from work (news to me!).

From there, the most relaxing 90 minutes of my life (okay, maybe a little extreme but at least of my year) began. The spa treatment I won was the 90-min “Let Down Your Stresses” so it included a facial but also a full body massage (amazing!). Everything felt so soothing, and I was warned by some friends ahead of time that facials can really swell your face or even flare up acne. None of that was an issue for me even immediately after my treatment. I felt like I was glowing and fresh walking out of the treatment room and it just got better over time!

VMV Makeup

If you live in NYC I would definitely recommend making a trip to their storefront in Soho and if you’re not local – check out their website! Not only is their skincare great, they also have a makeup line that is hypoallergenic as well. Personally, I’m a big fan of their boo boo balm (so good for lips and patchy areas on my face), sunscreens, and this eyebrow powder.

I Can’t Believe That’s From…: Old Navy

One of my favorite things to do with my outfits is surprise people. Not necessarily with what I’m wearing (my style is pretty tame), but with where what I am wearing was purchased. It gives you a little sense of validation as far as your shopping skills go to hear someone say “I can’t believe you found that THERE!”.

I decided to do a post on this because the above reaction has been occurring more and more frequently when I’m wearing pieces from (drum roll please)…OLD NAVY. My roommate has actually said to me “please do not tell me that you bought that at Old Navy” because she really can’t believe that I’m finding all of these super cute pieces there. If you are looking to stay on trend on a budget and haven’t taken a look at what they have in awhile, make a trip there ASAP. Check out some of my faves below (apologies in advance for the number of items, but really I love pretty much everything):

After all of that, I didn’t even include workout or swim items. Which are also amazing and you should check out.

Let us know if you find any fun new pieces for your wardrobe at Old Navy in the comments below!

Glossier-Review-Generation-G-Lipstick

Demand overwhelmed supply very quickly, and only the first to add to cart were able to get their hands on these cult beauty favorites so far this year. I snatched up Generation G in ‘Crush’ and just can’t get enough. It is the perfect compromise between lipstick, lip stain, lip gloss and balm. I want to collect them all (and not run out of my current supply before July – we’ll see!).

Also on my list upon restock is Glossier Stretch Concealer. Based on the blogger reviews to date, I have no doubts that this product lives up to its promise!
Where-to-Purchase-Glossier

So, what is in stock?

  • The new Flavored Balm Dotcom Trio {for a limited time!} features three fun flavors in Rose, Cherry, and Mint.
  • Boy Brow (in all 3 shades!) is currently in-stock and ready for ation.
  • My new favorite face wash, Milky Jelly Cleanser, is also available. (My favorite travel option is Yes to Cucumbers Facial Towelettes).
  • If you’re in need of a new mask (or just up for trying a bunch of options), the Mega Greens Galaxy Pack has received high marks, and I trust the Moisturizing Moon Mask is a keeper, too.
  • Glossier also recently debuted some darling merch, including sweatshirts, pink pouches, logo pins and terry headbands.

Gift Guide: For the Homebody

I think we have all fantasized about a cozy weekend indoors.  The snow falls lightly outside being illuminated by street lights while the fire blazes indoors. Glass of red wine in hand, snuggling on the couch with your boyfriend under a thick, hand-knit blanket… Please tell me it isn’t just me who finds themselves thinking of situations like this? Being the homebody that I am, there are quite a few gift ideas sure to make everyone happy as they spend more time indoors during the winter. Here are just a few:

1. What is better than a cup of tea on a chilly day? Add in some Netflix and you have the perfect relaxing day away from the cold. 2. I’ve basically been living in my blanket scarf since October. It’s so cozy and a perfect extra layer to wear around the house. 3. Your friend will have another reason to host a fun get together for you and your girlfriends – puzzle nights are surprisingly fun! 4. The second I get home and my shoes come off, my slippers come on. No better way to complete a cozy ensemble. 5. You know how much we love Pixie pants as an alternative to leggings! Your friend will appreciate a chic alternative to their lounging gear. 6. There is nothing I like better than lighting a candle and opening a good book. These are great because the scents are very fragrant and relaxing. 7. After you’ve had too many glasses of wine at puzzle night you can break out Apples to Apples for some more fun! 8. Slow cooker meals are so easy and will allow you to focus on making sure you get as much relaxation time as possible!
