Home Update: Master Bedroom Revamp with Lull Mattress

Shop the Post:

MATTRESS: Lull  //  HEADBOARD: Wayfair  // BED FRAME: Wayfair //  THROW PILLOWS: Target + Target  // NIGHTSTANDS: Target // RUG: Overstock

We’re slowing but surely making updates throughout our 1950s rambler. Our latest project: the master bedroom. When we moved in 2 years ago we were delighted to find enough room in the master to fit a king bed. But, at the time we had a relatively new mattress + headboard and couldn’t justify the cost. This month, we decided to make the leap in an effort to make our master more complete, and reuse our existing furniture to spruce up our guest bedroom.

Let’s start with the mattress. We were delighted when Lull reached out, as we’ve heard such wonderful things about their mattresses. As expected, Lull made the upgrade to a luxurious foam king bed pretty painless. I was skeptical how this “bed in a box” concept would pan out, but delivery was quick, setup was simple, and the mattress is so comfortable it feels like we’re staying at a high-end hotel.

What’s more? Lull comes with free shipping, free returns, and a 100 night risk free trial.

Contrast this with our first-ever mattress buying excursion, and it’s a night + day difference. Last time, we had the standard “strip mall mattress store experience” that resulted in forking over a much larger percentage of my paycheck than expected. I think I also left with a headache, from all the corny jokes and amateur sales tactics. Well, at least I had a mattress, right? (My old one was ruined when the roof of my rented condo leaked while I was on vacation. Yuck.). Talk about a terrible experience all around!

The Lull bed literally shows up in a box on your doorstep, so there’s no need to awkwardly test out mattress after mattress under the watch of a sales associate. If you’re in the market for a new mattress, check out Lull. Twins start at $550, while our King came in at only $950. They even offer a 100 day trial period, so if you don’t like the mattress you can return it. JCR readers can get $50 off your Lull with my discount: www.lull.com/sale.

**Thank you, Lull, for sponsoring this post! Opinions are our own.

P.S. I’m pretty camera shy but… here’s a peek at how simple (and dare I say fun?) setting up your Lull mattress can be!

Gift Ideas – Nordstrom & Nordstrom.com

I went to Nordstrom last weekend (to try on bridesmaid dresses for my friend Carrie’s wedding — we ♥ the Jenny Yoo ‘Annabelle’ Convertible Tulle Column Dress BTW!) and it confirmed what I thought to be true — stay out of Nordstrom ‘til next year. There’s no time for fussing and fighting, my friends. Instead, shop Nordstrom.com in the comfort of your own home.

I’ve spent WAY to much time on their site today sorting through potential gift picks, so I figured I’d share my top picks (and potentially save you some time!).

This year, they have gift picks sorted by recipient and price, making it easier to dig through their 1,000s of items. Choose from: Gifts for Women / Gifts for Men / Gifts for Juniors / Gifts for Kids / Gifts for Home.

I’ve successfully gotten through ‘Gifts for Women,’ and pulled out some of my favorites:

What’s at the top of your holiday shopping list this year?

Target Black Friday Deals – 2014 Preview

It’s been a tradition of ours to roll into Target during the wee hours of the morning on Black Friday.

Not necessarily because we need anything, but because:
A. Target is the best
B. We enjoy watching people in their pajamas ransacking towers of $2 DVDs

This year, Target is offering Black Friday Deals online all day Thursday, which is perfect, because I’m flying to Seattle for Thanksgiving and will have to forgo my typical 2:00am Target Run.

Whether you plan to hit your nearest Target store, or stay home in your yoga pants, the Black Friday preview on target.com provides all the info you need to pre-plan your shopping:

You can even create a ‘Quick List’ tagging items to come back to on Black Friday. If any apparel catches your eye, add it to your Quick List, because it will be 40% off!

Our Women’s Apparel picks include:

And the very best deal of all…

10% off Target Gift Cards in-store and online from 6:00am – noon Friday only.

Today Would Have Been Audrey Hepburn’s 85th Birthday

Google pays tribute to Hollywood’s fair lady in today’s Google Doodle.

After a bizarre and traumatic childhood, Audrey went on to be a Hollywood great. Read her story on The Guardian and be sure to check out 25 Timeless Style Lessons from Audrey Hepburn on HuffPostStyle.

Surely you’ve pranced around singing Wouldn’t it Be Loverly? when you were younger. And you’ve had (or still have, or know someone who had) one of these Breakfast at Tiffany’s posters:
I had both on the back of my closet door in college. I have no doubt that they influenced my style, seeing as my collection of LBDs (Little Black Dresses) and pearls grew during this time.

Not only are LBDs universally flattering, but so very classic and versatile.

J.Crew’s Wedding Shop has several classic styles:

Raquel Dress in Cotton Cady

Misha Dress in Cotton Cady {Extra 30% off w/ code: SALESALE).

And if you’re a 00 (I’m not…) you can score this Louisa Dress in Silk Chiffon for only $50 (reg: $250)!

Here’s my favorite LBD by Laundry by Shelli Segal:
The-JCR-Girls-Blog-Martha Photo Cred: GiGi New York.

Not only was Audrey a Hollywood star and a style icon, but she dedicated the last 5 years of her life to humanitarian work – Audrey Hepburn’s Work with UNICEF:

“From the moment she signed on, she went into the field, meeting with the starving children whose message of despair she hoped to carry to the rest of the world. Completely hands on in her approach, she raised the consciousness of millions of people about countries they never knew existed.”

The moral of the story is, as much as we’d love to emulate Audrey’s style by eating croissants and dressing to the nines a la Breakfast at Tiffany’s, we should take her real life work on behalf of the world’s children to heart. Visit unicefusa.org to help a child now.

Current Obsession: Catbird

I’m going to be honest here, this is actually a “by association” obsession. My roommate Britt loves Catbird (located in Williamsburg in BK) and I love everything she gets there SO… I won’t allow myself to visit the store. But I will make a trip up there soon on a day my self control is at a good level (I’m doing some conditioning for this by browsing the website regularly).

If you’ve caught midi-ring fever (it’s a thing) then this is the place to stock up. The rings really are so simple, but, if you are like me and do things like wear a midi-ring around your house to get comfortable with it, then simple is perfect. It’s also nice because then you can wear a lot of them and not give off a Liberace vibe (creepy, gaudy, etc. for those of you who don’t want to Google):

You can also look really trendy whilst helping a child blow his nose:

Sorry I just had to.

Okay so…not only do they have amazing jewelry:

Catbird Collage

They also have beauty and home products, and cute cards. Please see below for the only greeting card you will ever need. I mean, this could really work for any occasion:

You're Magical card

If you ever find yourself in Williamsburg, definitely make it a point to stop into Catbird (and take me with you!). If you don’t live in New York, or if you’re just not in the mood to bob and weave through groups of dirty hipsters, check out their website here.

PS – Check out some more of our favorite midi-rings that you can mix in with the ones you are sure to purchase from Catbird:

A Single Girl’s Guide: Your Best Friend’s Wedding

Quick update on my life that you don’t care about: I’m single.  That means I’ve been doing a LOT of therapeutic online window shopping… a favorite of the JCR girls.

A few of our PRO-TIPs for online window shopping post-break up: proceed with caution and hot tea, never approach the internet after 3 or more glasses of wine, and don’t actually BUY anything — trust us, you’re about to lose a lot of weight because you’re sad and eating reminds you of picnicking with your ex-lover in a meadow filled with daisies and your hopes and dreams, which absolutely never happened but IT COULD HAVE.

I haven’t been “real” shopping because I live in Brooklyn and my rent in one month is my clothes budget for an entire year.  Generally, I get by with my Christmas and Birthday presents, my roommates’ belongings, and $15 finds at Beacon’s Closet.  Bonus: when you shop at Beacon’s Closet you get to carry around a bag with a baby wearing hip glasses on the front.  It makes you look like you’re cool and from Brooklyn and I appreciate that because I’m not cool and I’m from Connecticut.  However,  I recently realized that a grand haul shopping trip is in store in the next month or so…

I had wondered back in January how I might continue on with my post as Resident Wedding Guest Blogger. I’d already posted about dresses twice; I’d covered my problem with shiny fabric; and now that I am in a romantic rut I’ve worried: Have I lost my Wedding Blogger Mojo?  But everything has a way of working itself out and one day, while online window shopping, I was reminded of all I have to look forward to… Which finally brings me to the Fashion portion of my post:

The JCR Girls Style Guide for Wedding Festivities!

The Bachelor Party

Bridal Parties aren’t always “traditional.”  For the girl who’s one of the guys, we suggest a laid back put together style:

We love the combination of classic pieces such as the nude/tan/peach wedges (J.Crew Lillian Patent Low Wedges) and a white blouse (MANGO Metal Fastening Blouse) paired with edgier pieces like a statement necklace (J.Crew Fan Fringe Necklace), and cut off/leather shorts (Rag & Bone Jean The Cut-Off Short.)  And while we’re all for breaking tradition and making things your own, we still think it’s bad behavior to wear white to weddings when you’re not the bride or not directed by her to do so! If you’re invited, sneak some white in at the Bachelor Party – you know you’ve been dying to show off your cute new spring top!

The Bachelorette

Girls, this is your night to go crazy!  While we don’t encourage behavior fit for a hollywood film, we think you should look like you belong in one.

There’s nothing wrong with getting noticed tonight, so go for it!  We love the combination of a fun, flirty dress (Ted Baker Penny Floral Embellished Red Dress) and attention-getting accessories.  The outfit above features OASIS Metallic T-bar Sandals and Modcloth’s Mint to Be Yours Bag.  What’s so great about these accessories is that they evoke a bygone era while remaining modern and fresh.  We love the idea of a modern pin-up cat eye with an outfit like this, check out  MAC Liquidlast Liner!

The Bridal Shower

Keep it light and classic for the Bridal Shower, with a few personalized touches.

Try a structured fit and flare dress like JCrew Loretta Dress in a summery shade paired with a flowy hat like JCrew Summer Straw Hat.  Add whimsical touches like Windsor Store’s Gold Love Signature Bracelet (similar here) , and Kate Spade New York All Wrapped Up Pearls Drop Earrings.  Then tie it all together with a staple piece from your closet, like white wedges (ZARA Block Sandal w/ Ankle Strap!)

The Rehearsal Dinner

For the Rehearsal Dinner, go for Ultra-Femme, Understated Elegance, in your clothes and in your demeanor: let the next 24 hours be about your family/friends without sacrificing fashion!

Peachy hues and lavender tones are perfect for a Rehearsal Dinner.   Find a dress that cinches in your waist and floats away from your hips like French Connection Berry Voile Fan Dress and pair it with a – dare we say it – COMFORTABLE low-rise heels (J.Crew Miri midheel suede pumps.)  Remember that you do NOT want sore blistered feet going into a day of standing on even MORE uncomfortable shoes! Remember to get creative – if you can’t find a necklace length you like with the neckline of your dress or shirt – check out the kid’s section like we did!  We found this JCrew Girls Ribbon-Tied Long Pearl Necklace, which would suit this neckline perfectly.  Finally, tie it all together with a peach-pink blush and lipstick like Nars Blush in Orgasm and Mac Creamsheen & Pearl Lipstick in Peach Blossom.

The Morning After

Ah, the bittersweet morning after.  You’ll probably find yourself partly glad the craziness is over and partly sad that something you have looked forward to has ended.  You will also probably be sore from dancing, tired, and possibly find yourself with a slight headache (21+ only!!!!)

Pictured: Jcrew Ray-Ban thick cat-eye Wayfarer sunglasses,  Korres Yoghurt Face Sunscreen Cream SPF30, Butter London Nail Lacquer in Fiver, Asos Straw Floppy Hat, TOPSHOP Cream Scallop Texture Swimsuit (similar)

Today, you will RELAX, sit by the pool, have a margarita, and think about how not married you are.

J. Crew Love in London!

As I am sitting in a tiny coffee shop on yet another rainy night in London, I have decided there is one thing I want you to take away from this post. Even more important than reading my opinion on how to add a British twist to your spring wardrobe, I need you to understand how much I miss J.Crew.   Now are there more important things in my life that I am missing from the States? Sure. My family, LUNA bars, and oh how I do miss the sun. But, not having a J.Crew store to stop in for a new gingham or even to just be surrounded by inspiring colors, has really taken a toll on me. Listen to me complaining as I am traveling England 😉   Enough wallowing in my current J.Crew-less life, I am excited to share with you two looks that I have been witnessing all over this beautiful country. And I am helping you create these British ensembles in head to toe, crew.

And come visit me on xodiaries.com for a peek into my little life in London!

PS* Did you know J.Crew is currently carrying a few pieces from Liberty Art Fabrics, from London!? See #8 and find more HERE.

Happy Spring Weddings & Parties Preview Season Everyone!

Via January 2013 — I woke up one day recently and realized Christmas’ saucy reds and sexy greens and New Year Eve’s shameless sparkles are behind us now, so we essentially have NOTHING to look forward to effectively until mid-/late March.  I proceeded to walk around looking like grumpy cat for the rest of the day, whence I got together with Future-Sister-in-Law, for a beverage and we proceeded to do what any JCR girl would do: open her Internet browser and check out the J.Crew website… obviously.

Actual quote from our conversation:  ”I haven’t checked the J.Crew website today.  Something might be new.  I might need it.”

I have been a terrible JCR girl of late and hadn’t checked out the Weddings and Parties Tab in some time, so naturally I was excited to see the Spring Preview was available.

First impression: Hooray! We started brushing our hair again!  Kind of!

Since we don’t know the names of these dresses yet, I’ve decided to give each dress my own name.

J. Crew Weddings & Parties | The JCR Girls

This dress is adorable, which is why I am so depressed about it.  I look at this and think what might have been.  Oh, what might have been if only this dress had been tea length.   It would have flowed so nicely with that 1950’s fit and flair!  I would have purchased it right now to wear on my wedding day, which would probably have led to a seriously concerned boyfriend, but come on…  I would have been so cute.  My dreams are crushed.

J. Crew Weddings & Parties | The JCR Girls

Do my eyes deceive me, or is this dress made out of our much loved and missed J.Crew Sun Dress Fabric?  Welcome to my life circa 2007.  If this is made out of that mystery crushed-crimped cotton fabric, it will be the most comfortable wedding dress in the world.  I love the subtle sweetheart neck and the full A-line.  This dress is simple, but it’s not plain.   ALSO: the little fabric flower belt around the waist is a sweet & elegant touch.  ALSOALSO: pockets. Obsessed.

J. Crew Weddings & Parties | The JCR Girls

In grade school, there was a period of time when I became obsessed with Camelot, and fantasy in general.  I think because that mini-series Merlin came out around that time.  I was also convinced that if I tried hard enough I would see fairies.  I was awesome.  Anyway, during this time I got a nightgown made of Irish linen and cotton eyelet lace so that I could be a night-fairy named Guinevere, duh.  This was that nightgown.  And that’s all I have to say about this one.

Despite my flippant attitude, I did like the dresses this season, which I have dubbed Throwback ’13.   I’m a big fan of throwbacks, be that to the ’50s, my high school sundress years, or my borderline-concerning active imagination as a child.

Do you find your own “throwbacks” in any of these dresses?
Let us know in the comments!
