Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Moms can never get enough credit.

As kids, they taught us how to make our beds, brush our teeth, and wear something that matches. As we grow older, they help us pick new bedspreads for college, keep extra toothbrushes on hand for our friends, and, well, shop with us for something that matches.

With everything our mothers do for us over the years, it’s only fair that they get a day completely dedicated to spoiling them right back. Spending time with your mom and letting her know you care is by far the best gift; however, you did get your sense of style and love of shopping from somewhere. Show her what excellent taste you inherited – I don’t think she’ll mind a little something all wrapped up!

There isn’t anyone (mom or otherwise) who wouldn’t love a new summer PJ set, kicked off on Sunday with breakfast in bed. I can say with no shame that I make a terrible cup of coffee, but I buy cute mugs to make up for it. #distractionbyikat Also, the coordinating colors? That was no accident.

I always like to pair a few things when gifting clothing. Whether she wears them independently or altogether with her favorite outfit, your mom is guaranteed to get a lot of use from these pieces as well as plenty of compliments. Plus, you can always borrow them. Didn’t they warn us when we were younger about dressing like our mothers?

If you have Instagram and/or don’t live under a rock, you know how trendy (and delicious!) macarons are right now. Why not try making them with your mom? I’ve heard they can be difficult – although this is coming from a girl who can’t make coffee – so pair this cookbook with a sweet summery apron in case things get messy.

If all else fails, take her out to lunch, buy her some flowers, and let her forget all her responsibilities for the day. You can make macarons or terrible coffee anytime, but there’s only one day a year when your mom knows the real reason why you’re doing it!

J. Crew Love in London!

As I am sitting in a tiny coffee shop on yet another rainy night in London, I have decided there is one thing I want you to take away from this post. Even more important than reading my opinion on how to add a British twist to your spring wardrobe, I need you to understand how much I miss J.Crew.   Now are there more important things in my life that I am missing from the States? Sure. My family, LUNA bars, and oh how I do miss the sun. But, not having a J.Crew store to stop in for a new gingham or even to just be surrounded by inspiring colors, has really taken a toll on me. Listen to me complaining as I am traveling England 😉   Enough wallowing in my current J.Crew-less life, I am excited to share with you two looks that I have been witnessing all over this beautiful country. And I am helping you create these British ensembles in head to toe, crew.

And come visit me on xodiaries.com for a peek into my little life in London!

~Anni

PS* Did you know J.Crew is currently carrying a few pieces from Liberty Art Fabrics, from London!? See #8 and find more HERE.

Spending Those J. Crew Gift Cards!

J. Crew E-Gift Card via JCrew.com

The holidays are over and now it’s back to the grind. On the bright side, many of my holiday gifts included clothing and gift cards, and I’ve indulged a bit in post-holiday sales (additional 30% off sale items and J. Crew and 50% off at Banana Republic, how could I resist?) so I’m feelin’ a stylish start to the new year.

Armed with gift cards and an ambition to make the most of my 2013 wardrobe, I’ve hit a roadblock. Finding new things to purchase at J. Crew is never difficult, but whittling that shopping cart down to a reasonable amount is quite the task…

October Style Guide Scan

The October Style Guide left me wanting just a bit more, not gonna lie. There were obviously some fabulous pieces and some great ideas for mixing prints, but I didn’t tear out too many pages. And that’s weird for me… I tend to be a hoarder when it comes to torn-out magazine pages. Let’s focus on the positives, shall we?

Double Cloth Coat

The first page that got the cut (in a good way!) featured a fabulous oxblood leather skirt, a peachy rose top, and a bright fuchsia double-cloth coat. I want to wear this outfit every day for the rest of my life. Or just until next month’s style guide gets delivered. You get the idea.

StyleGuideScan

Loved the style tip for monochromatic looks. TEXTURE, people. I’m tired of seeing boring head-to-toe looks. I love me a monochromatic outfit, but there has to be some interest. Texture is the easiest way to add some style points.

McalisterBoot

NAVY MACALISTERS. Enough said. These will be added to my shoe shelf ASAP. Navy has long been my go-to neutral and I’m loving the recent influx in navy basics.

Speaking of the Macalister… What are your thoughts on the new heel? I’m thinking I’ll stick with the classic wedge!

Overall, I’m loving J.Crew’s take on color for fall. And of course, no one does color and pattern mixing like our beloved. The color-way inter-mixing gives so many ideas of how to mix up your wardrobe this fall. Mints, cobalts, and emeralds. Pinks, oranges, and reds. Mix them up for a fresh spin on the monochromatic look!

August Style Guide Scan

So naturally this month’s Style Guide met my every excited expectation (after all, the fall preview is J.Crew’s strong suit). After leafing through all 135 pages the first time, what immediately tugged at my fashionista heartstrings? COLOR!, Jenna’s picks, Style Guide Tips, Twice as Nice, ladylike pleats, the prominence of polka dots… and who am I kidding? The list goes on…

Let me be the first to say that I am beyond excited color blocking is making its way into the fall season! And I am especially ecstatic about all of the beautiful jewel tones coming with it: light violets, deep blues, gorgeous jades… all very flattering and very feminine colors. My only suggestion to carry this trend into the colder months is to balance out a bright color (for example, mint toothpicks) with a more neutral or deeper shade (in cashmere or herringbone), just like on page 52:

J. Crew August 2012 Style Guide Herringbone and Yellow

I also very much enjoyed the Style Guide tips that popped up throughout this issue, and the Twice as Nice section in the middle. These two ideas are great ways to help clients better envision themselves in the pieces, provide insight, and offer other suggestions that clients may not think of themselves. Very helpful all around, J.Crew!

And for my last (but definitely not least!) favorite part of the Style Guide puzzle—polka dots! You can hardly go a page without seeing some form of pretty polkas. From cashmere to café capris, Naomi’s to Milas, this print is everywhere, and I am NOT complaining! As you will learn, I am a huge fan of pattern-play, aka sporting a little mixin’ and matchin’. Polka dots and stripes compliment each other very well, especially when paired with such chic pieces like on pages 3&4:

J. Crew Style Guide Polka Dot Shirts and Dresses Fall 2012

Even though there are too many things in the August Style Guide that I am drooling over, that is not to say I did a double take…or two.

First, dare I say it… fatigues. Yes, camouflage. I cannot say enough great things about the “Twice is Nice” section, except for no one should ever be given two ways to wear fatigues. They should be told to leave that for hunting and, well, never. I’m sure some of you probably think I am getting ahead of myself here, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have a camouflage skirt hiding somewhere in the back of my closet from my preteen days, but that piece only makes it out for theme parties. When I’m desperate. I think I’ve made myself clear.

J. Crew Style Guide Camo Fatigues and Tweed

Our second faux pas is a few short pages later, in the same Twice as Nice section (p.70)! However, I am not upset with the style idea suggested. I love navy, and am wearing the color at any given time, on any given day. But under the navy boyfriend jacket, we have a dark denim button down paired with dark denim matchsticks. This dark denim-on-denim fad is just a little to Village People for me. Believe it or not, attractive ways to pull off the denim-on-denim look can be done! Pair a light chambray button down with colored toothpicks and you’re good to go!

As J.Crew stylist, Gayle Spannaus’s suggests: Don’t overthink it…or better yet, don’t let them know you did.” That’s the natural style and sophistication we have come to expect from J.Crew. In so keeping with this simplified approach, let them worry about dressing you so you can enjoy life’s celebrations.
