Week in Review: Labor Day Week+End

If you’ve been following us on Instagram, you’ve probably been picking up on a pink theme…

jcrew-challenge-pink We’re excited to announce that we are participating in another J.Crew Challenge, this time – PINK. How refreshing for fall, right? You don’t need to go full-on autumnal to get into the season. 226 shades of pink provide plenty of opportunity to personalize your look.

We were thrilled when J.Crew asked us to participate in the “Into the Wild” #jcrewchallenge, and the same it true this time around.

While we’re excited for sweater weather and crisp autumn air, we are experiencing a bout of the summer blues. On the bright side, these blue pieces are perfect for transitioning from summer to fall: Rider Bag in Italian Leather // Sam Sunglasses in Navy // Colorful Crystal Necklace // Deck-Stripe T-Shirt // Vintage Pajama Set // Ruffle Dress in Tropical Floral // Roxie Suede T-Strap Pumps.

Weekend Recap
Labor Day weekend was spent enjoying the sunshine (responsibly – see below), planning upcoming trips and making some minor home improvements.Lake-Minnetonka-MN

Sunshine: Enjoy Responsibly. To continue the skincare theme, we tried Supergoop for the first time this week. An alarming 90% of the signs of aging are caused by the sun. It’s important to protect yourself year-round with SPF Skincare. We are enjoying the Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist, and will be purchasing more products in the near future, because…

Supergoop is NOW 20% OFF thru 9/8 with code: sg!365

Cabo-San-Lucas-El-ArcoSun protection will be incredibly important during our upcoming trip to Cabo San Lucas! I’ve been once before and can attest to the fact that the sun is strong and hard to hide from. Christmas in Cabo is still ages away, so I’ll spare you the details (for now!).

Grace-Hill-Design-Artisan-Home-Minnesota

Spent an embarrassing amount of time cleaning and organizing and decorating this weekend. We’ve been up and down every aisle of Home Depot, Menards and Lowe’s, and the place still doesn’t look remotely like this! This photo is filed under “Bedroom Inspo,” snapped at the Artisan Home Tour, designed by @gracehilldesign. I guess we’ll keep trying… If we make any solid progress, I’ll post updates on the blog!

Labor Day Sale Roundup:

P.S. Did you hear the news? J.Crew coming to 16 select Nordstrom stores across the country! Match made in heaven.

Week in Review: Summertime Gladness

Hard to believe we’re over halfway through August! Here’s what we’ve been up to lately…

Minnesota-Summer-Lake-Minnetonka-Jack-Rogers
Summer may be fleeting, but there’s no better time than the present to purchase a new pair of sandals (that’s what I told myself, at least). This time, I went with the Jack Rogers Capri Sandal in Platinum. Super comfortable + great for narrow feet! Rumor has it, there’s an “End of the Season” sale on now at jackrogers.com with savings up to 60% off!

Minnesota-Summer-Lake-Minnetonka-Anchor-Tote-Seabag
In addition to my go-to summer sandals, I’ve been getting a ton of use out of my @seabagsmaine tote this season. Many of you asked [something along the lines of…]
Q: Would you recommend this oversized, excessively nautical tote bag?
A: Oh for shore! (Aren’t you relieved I didn’t say tote-ally?)

In all seriousness, I do really like it. The bag fits multiple beach towels, beverages, sunscreen – you name it! Also pretty cool that it’s made of recycled sails. ♻️ I went with the Large Navy Zip Top Anchor Tote + Hanging Pocket (I’d recommend both the zipper + pocket upgrades!).

Minnesota-Summer-Lake-Minnetonka-SailboatSo, I’m still saving up for that boat, but until then I’ll continue to snap photos like this and live vicariously though them. Follow along on Instagram @TheJCRGirls for more where this came from!

The title of this post isn’t entirely accurate. While I’m trying my best to embrace “Summertime Gladness,” the end-of-summer blues is really starting to hit home. To combat this, I’ve been spending tons of time outside – running, biking, festival-going and dining al fresco (that is, in addition to yard work, but I doubt you want to hear about that…).

P.S. – Still getting plenty of wear out of this Ratti “Into the Wild” print – as seen in our recent #JCrewChallenge series!

In the spirit of back-to-school season, I’ve rounded up some of our favorite geek chic accessories including: “You Got This” Trinket Dish, Gold & Acrylic StaplerShop Sonix Palm Print Case, Rose Gold Scissors, Rifle Paper Legal Notepad & Warby Parker Tortoise Glasses!

Anchor-Necklace-LK-Meyer-Gold

You know we can’t resist a good nautical motif, so this new necklace from LK Meyer (handcrafted in Rhode Island) and “Sail Away” notebook needed to join the collection of nautical necessities.

Back-to-School-Desk-Accessories We stretched the “back-to-school” theme even further and decided it was a great opportunity to refresh both desk and bar cart accessories.

Last Minute Gift Guide: For the Beauty Lover

Nothing puts me in the holiday spirit quite like the promise of a colorful new eye shadow palette for my collection. It’s the one time of the year I don’t have to justify my want of designer mascara or sparkly caviar nail pearls because that’s the beauty (see what I did there?) of gift-giving season.

So I say away with you practicality! Pop open a can of Champers and treat yourself (and the ladies in your life) to something pretty, like one of these gems below:
1.. Because you can never have too many eye shadow palettes.
2.. This cult mascara stuffs stockings and changes lives.
3.. Save the calories for Santa and smell like an iced gingerbread cookie instead.
4. You want the men in your life to look good too.
5. Ultra-rich hand cream ornaments for your tree? Yes please!
6. Lip glosses in every shade for holiday celebrations and the year ahead!
7. Erase a year of skincare sins with this hypoallergenic Re-Everything Treatment Toner.
8. Ring in the new year looking looking fierce with this edgy 24/7 Eyeliner Collection.
9. Then glow all winter with this hydrating skincare set.
10. Countdown to Christmas with this advent calendar of festive nail polishes and sparkly goodies.

Gift Guide: For the Homebody

I think we have all fantasized about a cozy weekend indoors.  The snow falls lightly outside being illuminated by street lights while the fire blazes indoors. Glass of red wine in hand, snuggling on the couch with your boyfriend under a thick, hand-knit blanket… Please tell me it isn’t just me who finds themselves thinking of situations like this? Being the homebody that I am, there are quite a few gift ideas sure to make everyone happy as they spend more time indoors during the winter. Here are just a few:

HomebodyGiftGuide1

HomebodyGiftGuide2

1. What is better than a cup of tea on a chilly day? Add in some Netflix and you have the perfect relaxing day away from the cold. 2. I’ve basically been living in my blanket scarf since October. It’s so cozy and a perfect extra layer to wear around the house. 3. Your friend will have another reason to host a fun get together for you and your girlfriends – puzzle nights are surprisingly fun! 4. The second I get home and my shoes come off, my slippers come on. No better way to complete a cozy ensemble. 5. You know how much we love Pixie pants as an alternative to leggings! Your friend will appreciate a chic alternative to their lounging gear. 6. There is nothing I like better than lighting a candle and opening a good book. These are great because the scents are very fragrant and relaxing. 7. After you’ve had too many glasses of wine at puzzle night you can break out Apples to Apples for some more fun! 8. Slow cooker meals are so easy and will allow you to focus on making sure you get as much relaxation time as possible!

XO,

Laura

New Beauty Favorites

A few months ago I did a post on my favorite beauty items. Based on recommendations from friends, (I’m not a huge fan of trial and error) I’ve made some additions to that list.

Biore Charcoal Cleanser: This stuff is really amazing. My face has never felt so good with another cleanser, and it’s only $6.99! The charcoal in the cleanser helps to draw impurities out of your pores so you know you are getting a deep clean.

Biore Charcoal Cleanser

Laura Mercier Highlighter: I had wanted a highlighter for awhile and decided to go with a powder version. The liquid seemed like too big of a step to start out with. The Laura Mercier highlighter is great because it is subtle and not too glittery like some of the others out there.

Laura Mercier Highlighter

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer: My (ex) boss and (forever and always) New York Spirit Guide is obsessed with Sephora. This benefits me because I get all of the best tips from her on what to buy (oh, and all of the samples she doesn’t want)! She gave me two samples of the Urban Decay Eyeshadow primer and after the first use I was sold. Especially now that it’s summer I’m happy I don’t have to worry about my eye makeup melting off from the always present humidity!

Sorry ladies, but this color is going out of style! Literally, it’s being discontinued. Which makes me sad, but then again, kind of makes it extra special. Can’t wait to have my girls sporting Wild Beet by my side next July!

It was a successful 4th of July weekend!

Fourth-of-July-Weekend-2014

Hope you enjoyed it! I had a relaxing weekend at a friend’s cabin on the lake and wore nothing but red, white and blue. Which reminded me… I really love this color combo–it’s surely influenced by my nautical obsession, too!

So even though the bunting and star-spangled beach towels are no longer necessary, sporting red, white, and blue (at least thru September) is acceptable in my book!

Today Would Have Been Audrey Hepburn’s 85th Birthday

Google pays tribute to Hollywood’s fair lady in today’s Google Doodle.

After a bizarre and traumatic childhood, Audrey went on to be a Hollywood great. Read her story on The Guardian and be sure to check out 25 Timeless Style Lessons from Audrey Hepburn on HuffPostStyle.

Surely you’ve pranced around singing Wouldn’t it Be Loverly? when you were younger. And you’ve had (or still have, or know someone who had) one of these Breakfast at Tiffany’s posters:
I had both on the back of my closet door in college. I have no doubt that they influenced my style, seeing as my collection of LBDs (Little Black Dresses) and pearls grew during this time.

Not only are LBDs universally flattering, but so very classic and versatile.

J.Crew’s Wedding Shop has several classic styles:

Raquel Dress in Cotton Cady
JCrew-Raquel-Dress-Cotton-Cady

Misha Dress in Cotton Cady {Extra 30% off w/ code: SALESALE).

And if you’re a 00 (I’m not…) you can score this Louisa Dress in Silk Chiffon for only $50 (reg: $250)!

Here’s my favorite LBD by Laundry by Shelli Segal:
The-JCR-Girls-Blog-Martha Photo Cred: GiGi New York.

Not only was Audrey a Hollywood star and a style icon, but she dedicated the last 5 years of her life to humanitarian work – Audrey Hepburn’s Work with UNICEF:

“From the moment she signed on, she went into the field, meeting with the starving children whose message of despair she hoped to carry to the rest of the world. Completely hands on in her approach, she raised the consciousness of millions of people about countries they never knew existed.”

The moral of the story is, as much as we’d love to emulate Audrey’s style by eating croissants and dressing to the nines a la Breakfast at Tiffany’s, we should take her real life work on behalf of the world’s children to heart. Visit unicefusa.org to help a child now.
