Home Update: Master Bedroom Revamp Part II

If you tuned into Part I of this series, you know how much we love our new Lull mattress. After it arrived, we had to act quickly to get the rest of the room together (primarily the bed components so the old and new could be fully swapped out in one evening).
Wayfair-Headboard-Frame

Rather than purchasing an upholstered bed frame + headboard combo (because $$$$), we found a wood bed frame [Templeton Exceptional Platform Bed in Walnut from Wayfair] + separate headboard [Cora Upholstered Wingback Headboard by House of Hampton – also Wayfair], and we love the way they pair together! The big bonus of going this route was the ability to ditch the box spring (since the mattress fits right on top of the bed frame slats) and ditch the bed skirt.

Since we already owned this nuLOOM Handmade Casual Braided Wool Grey Rug, I wanted the wood frame and navy blue headboard to complement the existing rug vs. compete. This also guided our choices for sheets [Classic Percale Navy + White Stripe Sheet Set] and duvet + cover in classic white. For now, we are still using our Classic Down Full/Queen Duvet Insert from Crate & Barrel (it just covers the bed vs. hanging over the sides). We’ll probably end up upgrading to the King size for winter, but for now it gets the job done.

Since we don’t have king sized pillows or shams yet (suggestions welcome!), I’ve been borrowing throw pillows from other parts of the house to jazz up the bed in the interim. Love how these Oversized Banana Leaf Throw Pillows look on both the bed and our brown leather sectional (currently on clearance, grab ’em here), and the Navy Bird Throw Pillow is also a Target Threshold find.

The Target trend continues with the nightstands, and although assembly is required, we’ve been pleased with the pair of Campaign Nightstands in White. I’m also loving these Davenport Chests from Joss & Main (perhaps for our guest bedroom?). It complements this Agostino 6 Drawer Double Dresser so nicely!

For now, we’ve opted out of window treatments (aside from the wooden slat shutters that came with the place) and neglected to add a signature “end of bed bench” or pair of X-benches to the foot of the bed. Since the frame is visible, I don’t think we need ’em (but open to your ideas on finishing touches for the space, if you have any!).

Fun fact: the lamp is from a hotel furniture resale shop (when hotels redecorate they purge their bedroom collections and start fresh). The base of the lamp has two outlets – perfect for charging my husband’s work phone and personal cell phone at once, without cords stretching across the room.

Give the Gift of Wine

There really isn’t anything more special than a DIY’d gift. But let’s be honest, it can be hard to find classy, adult DIY options. Enter the Craft A Brew Wine Kit. Yep, you can make your own wine – what’s more adult and classy than that?! As someone who will never say no to a glass of wine, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make my own!

CAB1

The kits (which retail for $60 USD) make five bottles of wine so you’re getting a pretty good price per bottle! So, the economics of it check out. Now I’ll share some overall takeaways I have from the process itself:

  • This is not a solo project – but I think part of the fun of it is sharing the experience with someone else!
  • It was really cool to see the science behind wine making! Because you are turning juice into wine it’s going to go through a lot of chemical changes so don’t be alarmed if it looks a little weird or things are moving around.
  • After phase one you have to get the wine out of the jug and into a pan to add some more components to get your wine to the finish line. I gotta be honest, this step wasn’t fun for me. It was a little frustrating but ultimately we (my boyfriend was so kind and acted as my wine making assistant) figured it out!
  • Be sure to read the instruction manual in its entirety before starting the process. I was super excited to get to making my wine and I think if I would have read through every step it would have been beneficial.

CAB2In the end, the wine tasted pretty good but for me it was just cool to know that I made it! I loved checking in on my wine every day to see how things were changing with it.

The whole process takes a month so if you start soon you’ll have wine ready to go for Mother’s Day to celebrate all of the special ladies in your life and National Wine Day to celebrate well…your special love of wine. I also think it would be so fun to buy the kit and go through the wine making process with your mom or girlfriends! Here are some more of our favorite wine-centric items to mix in with your gift or girls night:

PS – thanks to Craft A Brew for sending me the pinot grigio wine making kit. All opinions are my own!

What I’m Into Right Now: Design & Decor

Having just moved from a 700 sq. ft apt into a 1,000 sq. ft apt,  I’m quite delighted by the amount of closet space I now have (not that there’s that much extra closet space, but you know, when J. Crew calls…)

This also explains the reason why I haven’t been blogging for a really long time. You see, I’ve been apt hunting and packing and moving and cleaning and finally…the fun part: Designing and Decorating!

Thought I’d share some of my design inspiration and new decor ideas!
I bring you, What I’m Into Right Now:

Crane & Canopy Bedding

I especially LOVE that it’s a startup and a husband + wife duo!

Sometimes I wish I didn’t have such expensive taste…

But to combat this issue, I’ve been doing things like:

Getting up at the crack of dawn on Saturday mornings in an attempt to score some fancy furniture at 70% off;
Scouring Craigslist for designer finds in great condition,
Keeping my eye on estate sales in key zip codes,

And Spray Painting Things Gold.

In order to make things look EXTRA LUXE, I’ve gotten really into spray painting things gold. I think the bf is getting really sick of me saying, “But what if I painted it gold?! Then it would look totally fab…”
Although I think it’s growing on him because just tonight I caught him reading Glitter & Goat Cheese

This IKEA Hack is at the top of my list:

And to Accessorize…

Apothocary Jars!

I mean, they’re just so versatile. You can keep your soap collection OR your fruit collection in them.
But seriously…look at these beautes:

Throw Pillows

and just to throw myself a curveball…I actually bought a couch that comes with throw pillows.
Probably a wise decision considering I could easily spend $250+ on throw pillows alone…
Martha's New Couch!Editor’s Note: I’ll be recovering the front two pillows that look like they have French graffiti handwriting all over them. I’ll opt for a POP of color instead. Suggestions? Tweet me!

{Nautical} Vinyl Wall Decals

I know what you’re thinking…they’re tacky and I hate them! I was totally with you until I saw these…

and I knew I absolutely had to have them.

I’m getting the itch to try a few new DIY projects, including some of these. I’ll throw them up on the blog when they’re done!

In the meantime…what are your favorite sources for design + decor ideas? Have any ideas for making your living space more like a J. Crew store? Tell us!

XO,

Marty

J. Who? Stop Teesin’ Me.

Many of these looks beg the question: “J. Who?”
As in: J. Crew, do you REALLY sell these things? No teasin’?
Or “Teesin’ ” as we will refer to it here on out as many of the “J. Who? Whaa?” questions refer to totally wack t-shirts.

That’s HOT!

Literally, you will be so hot in this top. $795 for a leather tee? Wait, did you say leather tee? Is it just me or do short sleeves = warm weather and leather = cold weather and/or bikers that don’t want their skin torn off?

…T-shirt? Say Whaaa?

The Dulcie Mini is pretty fly though (Imagine with a fancy white sleeveless collared shirt? So CHIC!)

Shimmerveil Tee: Silk/Lurex® plus the Midas Touch

Yes, it is veiled in shimmer. Which is kinda cool, but at the same time feels a bit like a short-sleeved swimsuit. “The brilliant fabric, a mix of silk and metallic threading, comes to us from a venerable Italian mill..Our designer crafted this smoldering beauty in a universally flattering silhouette with a drape so fluid, it’s like wearing liquid gold

You can also get the Shimmerveil Dress, which is equally stunning and startling. GLitz. Glam. Dare I say Gaudiness?

Well there you have it! Some tee-rific ideas for DIY projects. Check the J. Crew website for the 95% of new arrivals I did not make fun of in this post. Mostly because the did not make me say: “J. Who?” and instead simply tempted me to drop em in my shopping cart…
