Week in Review: Summertime Gladness

Hard to believe we’re over halfway through August! Here’s what we’ve been up to lately…

Minnesota-Summer-Lake-Minnetonka-Jack-Rogers
Summer may be fleeting, but there’s no better time than the present to purchase a new pair of sandals (that’s what I told myself, at least). This time, I went with the Jack Rogers Capri Sandal in Platinum. Super comfortable + great for narrow feet! Rumor has it, there’s an “End of the Season” sale on now at jackrogers.com with savings up to 60% off!

Minnesota-Summer-Lake-Minnetonka-Anchor-Tote-Seabag
In addition to my go-to summer sandals, I’ve been getting a ton of use out of my @seabagsmaine tote this season. Many of you asked [something along the lines of…]
Q: Would you recommend this oversized, excessively nautical tote bag?
A: Oh for shore! (Aren’t you relieved I didn’t say tote-ally?)

In all seriousness, I do really like it. The bag fits multiple beach towels, beverages, sunscreen – you name it! Also pretty cool that it’s made of recycled sails. ♻️ I went with the Large Navy Zip Top Anchor Tote + Hanging Pocket (I’d recommend both the zipper + pocket upgrades!).

Minnesota-Summer-Lake-Minnetonka-SailboatSo, I’m still saving up for that boat, but until then I’ll continue to snap photos like this and live vicariously though them. Follow along on Instagram @TheJCRGirls for more where this came from!

The title of this post isn’t entirely accurate. While I’m trying my best to embrace “Summertime Gladness,” the end-of-summer blues is really starting to hit home. To combat this, I’ve been spending tons of time outside – running, biking, festival-going and dining al fresco (that is, in addition to yard work, but I doubt you want to hear about that…).

You know we can’t resist a good nautical motif, so this new necklace from LK Meyer (handcrafted in Rhode Island) and “Sail Away” notebook needed to join the collection of nautical necessities.

Back-to-School-Desk-Accessories We stretched the “back-to-school” theme even further and decided it was a great opportunity to refresh both desk and bar cart accessories.

Fancy Favorites

Do you use the Fancy app?
Now, it’s no Pinterest or Tumblr, but still highly useful for finding fun, interesting, useful, or just plain fancy things. Overall, some really cool stuff you probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

Here’s a sampling of the things I fancy:

What I’m Into Right Now: Design & Decor

Having just moved from a 700 sq. ft apt into a 1,000 sq. ft apt,  I’m quite delighted by the amount of closet space I now have (not that there’s that much extra closet space, but you know, when J. Crew calls…)

This also explains the reason why I haven’t been blogging for a really long time. You see, I’ve been apt hunting and packing and moving and cleaning and finally…the fun part: Designing and Decorating!

Thought I’d share some of my design inspiration and new decor ideas!
I bring you, What I’m Into Right Now:

Sometimes I wish I didn’t have such expensive taste…

But to combat this issue, I’ve been doing things like:

Getting up at the crack of dawn on Saturday mornings in an attempt to score some fancy furniture at 70% off;
Scouring Craigslist for designer finds in great condition,
Keeping my eye on estate sales in key zip codes,

And Spray Painting Things Gold.

In order to make things look EXTRA LUXE, I’ve gotten really into spray painting things gold. I think the bf is getting really sick of me saying, “But what if I painted it gold?! Then it would look totally fab…”
Although I think it’s growing on him because just tonight I caught him reading Glitter & Goat Cheese

This IKEA Hack is at the top of my list:

And to Accessorize…

Apothocary Jars!

I mean, they’re just so versatile. You can keep your soap collection OR your fruit collection in them.
But seriously…look at these beautes:

and just to throw myself a curveball…I actually bought a couch that comes with throw pillows.
Probably a wise decision considering I could easily spend $250+ on throw pillows alone…

{Nautical} Vinyl Wall Decals

I know what you’re thinking…they’re tacky and I hate them! I was totally with you until I saw these…

I’m getting the itch to try a few new DIY projects, including some of these. I’ll throw them up on the blog when they’re done!

The Spring Breakdown

With Spring Break rapidly approaching, the only thing more stressful than finalizing your tropical getaway is deciding what clothes your suitcase has room for.  Since most destinations lack laundry facilities, packing versatile pieces is key.  Luckily, J.Crew’s resort 2013 collection has an abundance of versatile pieces that are perfect for a springtime getaway! So many, in fact, you’ll likely need to sit on your suitcase to get it zipped!

Regardless of the potentially unsightly toll that winter may have taken on your physique, J.Crew swimwear is full of options for all body types. For those of you who managed to stay slender this winter, the bandeau bikinis are amazing.  Not only are they available in fun patterns and prints, but they are totally mix and match-able! Don’t be afraid to mix polka dots with solids or stripes with florals!

As for those of us who aren’t particularly thrilled for our bodies to make a…big…splash at the pool this spring break (myself included), there are still fabulous options with a bit more coverage!  I know it’s tricky to find a modest swimsuit that doesn’t scream “frumpy,” but J.Crew is here to change that mentality!  Check out the Painters Floral Tank or the Liberty Underwire Tank.  These one-piece suits are perfect for someone seeking more coverage without sacrificing style! Also, BE SURE to bring along a cover-up, like the Embroidered Rope Tunic. If you’re not on the beach or pool, a little coverage is the classier route to take.

For daily excursions, dresses are key. The Tiered Ruffle Dress has been a staple for the past few years, and continues to be a classic and simple option to throw on in the morning and wear throughout the day.  The Lightweight Washed Chambray Dress is also a great option.  It’s beachy without being too casual, so you can wear it almost anywhere during the day!

As for nighttime, nothing screams resort dinner to me more than a flowy maxi skirt with a simple tank.  The Striped Jersey Maxi Skirt is a lightweight and breathable fabric, and with a plain tank tucked in, is perfect for dinner and cocktails.

Stripes on Stripes | The JCR Girls

Accessorizing isn’t extremely crucial on spring break, but there are a few must haves for the beach.  Firstly, a sun-protective hat.  Regardless of whether you prefer a floppy straw hat or an androgynous fedora, a hat is never a bad idea, especially for peak sunning hours (or to wear to breakfast after a night in the discoteque…).  You also need a go-to pair of sunglasses.  Aviators and Wayfarers are always a safe bet and the Ray-Bans that J.Crew carries are fantastic quality – I’ve had my Clubmasters for over 4 years and they’re in perfect condition. Throw a few bangles and some bold necklaces in a durable beach bag, too, like the Farmers Market Tote, and you’re good to go!

Tortoise Ray-Bans Aviators The Spring Breakdown | The JCR Girls

Lastly, SHOES.  They are the absolute most annoying things to pack, so make your decisions wisely.  The likelihood that you’ll wear a pair of heels isn’t great, so leave those at home.

Bring three things:
1. A cute pair of sandals that can transition from day to night, like the Kira Sandal
2. A pair of beach appropriate sandals, like the Tortoise Capri Sandal
3. A pair of closed toed shoes, like the Sperry Metallic Boat Shoe

See, it’s easy.  Once your suitcase is packed, the only thing you need to enjoy your trip is a piña colada and a chaise.  There’s no reason your packing experience should be any less relaxing than your vacation!

Style Crush: C. Wonder

C. Wonder Store in Cape Cod - Photo via JustLuxe.com Photo via Justluxe.com

I was introduced to C. Wonder  through AMC’s The Pitch (a dramaticized view of the ad agency world, inspired by the hype around MadMen, but far from an accurate portrayal of the agency world). But I won’t bore you with the dynamics of the advertising industry in this post. Instead, I will shine some light on this new clothing chain, C. Wonder.

For starters, I stalked them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and was decently impressed with their branding, design aesthetic, cutesy GIFs sprinkled throughout their website. The website itself features several social media calls-to-action a la Kate Spade’s Shop | Play site…oh sorry, I promised I wouldn’t bore you with advertising/marketing speak!

While copying Kate on the site layout (and who can blame them, it’s brilliant), C. Wonder’s design aesthetic closely channels Tory Burch. Which is no surprise because the founder is Chris Burch, Tory’s ex-husband. [Read more about that here]. Instead of bright orange, C. Wonder shows off bright green, rather than the signature buckle, C. Wonder displays cursive-y C’s.
C. Wonder Blog Post C. Wonder recently opened a shop in Nantucket, and from the Facebook pics, it looks pretty darn cute. Next time I’m on the East Coast I will definitely pop in to a C. Wonder store. I’m already impressed with their branding, design and store layout, (on a mission to surprise, delight and inspire middle-aged women to pull out their credit cards) but I want to see if the quality of products lives up to expectations. It’s quite a price break from Tory Burch pieces, but I still have high hopes.

While most of their clothing skews toward an older female demographic, I’m drawn to a few key pieces and several of their house ware/decor items:

Why is a blog called “J. Crew Review” talking about other brands? Well…we are actually in the midst of a transition. We LOVE J. Crew to death, but we are ready to take this blog to the next level. Stay tuned for more “Style Crush” content in the near future.

Grand Strands

If you follow us on Instagram (JCrewReview), you have probably caught on to the fact that I am literally obsessed with necklaces. Especially of the statement variety. Now, my love for flashy but classy jewels has always existed. But now, I have to wear all black to work. Something I would have been thrilled with in my Chicago dwelling days when I seemed to have been hit with the black plague (ba-doom-chhhh). However, with this “pop of color” trend blowing up and warm weather days just screaming to be graced with gorgeous colored ensembles, I’m quite depressed about this dress code. What a lovely excuse to go stock up on statement jewelry and how lucky am I that Crew is fully stocked with necklaces just screaming, “buy me, I need a good home.”

J. Crew Bubble Necklace - J. Crew Review

Pictured above: my fave statement necklaces I wear from Crew on a regular basis. I think these are all fun enough to spice up a boring outfit, but still have a classic feeling to them (key when it comes to accessorizing).

When it comes to statement jewelry, however, I am not fully committed to Crew. It’s hard to find a sparkle strand I don’t love. Here are some of my other favorites:

Preppy Techie

After being hit with a major slack-attack (aka I’ve been really lazy the past few weeks), I’m finally back to write my preppy techie post that I developed the idea for after the purchase of my iPad over a month ago. It’s been sitting on our draft board for that long, glaring at me judgmentally and I can’t take it anymore so I’m gonna write it.

Finding a case for your iPad, iPhone, or laptop is seriously hard. Some may think I’m being dramatic, but I beg to differ. You can’t just go out there looking for something that’s cute. Let’s be serious, that one cute case you fall in love with will be the one that costs $5,000 and leave you asking if it is made with angel tears by french speaking unicorns.

So, taking into account price, appearance and functionality, let’s take a look at some good options to protect your tech:

Patterned DODOcase for J. Crew $84.95

Also available in paisley and leopard. I love this case because it looks like a book, making it perfect for transporting in your purse!

Printed iPhone 4 Case $25

Again, available in all sorts of patterns. I was lusting after this on my lunch break today (seriously I’m torturing myself by going to Crew during my no-shopping-during-Lent commitment). This case is so fun for summer and anything nautical is perfect!

Printed iPad case $9.99

Rawr! This iPad case is super exotic and super on sale! Snag it up while you can!

Other favorites:

Kate Spade Rainspot Neoprene iPad Case

For $50, this Kate Spade sleeve provides a cute cover for your iPad while providing protection for travel.

iPad Smart Cover $98

I have this case and I love it because you can turn it into a little stand for easier use of the iPad!

My Week in Crew

I love EVERYTHING J. Crew…this isn’t a surprise. But what items could I just not get enough of last week? Here’s my week in Crew! (PS- I am no wiz when it comes to Polyvore, but I really tried for you guys so hopefully you’ll appreciate the effort to spice up the blog a bit!)

J. Crew Accessories and Clothing for winter A: I’ve been carrying my Archie Grand notebook in my purse every since Martha gave it to me for Christmas! I’ve been jotting down everything from to do lists to blog ideas!

B: The weather has been all over the place the past week, but on the extra chilly days I’ve been throwing on my earmuffs to keep me toasty. They are so cute and the perfect way to keep your hair as you styled it when you left the house!

C: My black Jackie has been a savior this past week (and for the past few to be honest) I have to wear all black at my job. Sounds easy but is much harder to do when you are forced. I have been throwing this on over everything to follow the dress code.

D: The Painter Turtleneck and the Pintuck Tank were both purchased during my trip to Indianapolis and their sweet little details have been adding just enough visual interest to my daily ensembles.

E: Of course, I can never forget my sparkles and statement jewels.
